How power wide area networks (LPWANs) have been gaining significant ground in recent years. They are giving tough competition to cellular networks. The main advantage of cellular networks is broad coverage, but there remain many locations with poor or no coverage.

Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, along with two partners, Mueller Systems and Senet, will launch a low-power, wide-area network in Ventura County to wirelessly track groundwater pumping data from the Fox Canyon aquifer, which sources water to most of the region. The Fox Canyon Groundwater Management Agency board voted unanimously to approve the proposed project, which will streamline the existing data collection process and provide a more cost-efficient model for the county.
